About us

Invisible Connections supplies the concrete construction industry with ‘unseen’ telescopic connection systems for stairs and landings, beams and columns. We are also specialist manufacturers of the FERBOX reinforcement continuity system, to application requirements.

Derek Brown

Managing Director

With over 30 years as a product specialist within the construction industry, Derek’s most notable success was originating the first reinforcement continuity strip product to achieve widespread appeal, ‘Kwikastrip,’ which he built to become the market leader, before being acquired by Halfen in 2001. More recently, after more than a decade in high profile positions within the supply sector, Derek recognised the opportunity to renew his owner-manager experience and teamed up with the Norwegian manufacturer, Invisible Connections AS, to become their UK partner. At the same time, Derek renewed his manufacturing leanings by establishing the current factory in Thame, Oxfordshire, principally to manufacture the FERBOX reinforcement continuity system.

Derek places high value on building long-term relationships with customers, suppliers and colleagues via an honest and earnest style of management.

Lesley Brown

Finance Director

Lesley has enjoyed a long career in finance, working freelance for several SMEs. She is used to collaborating closely with owner-managers and producing detailed management accounts, which she supports with interpretation and advice. Lesley has worked for architects, developers and together with Derek for many years, so is familiar with the customs and practices of the construction industry. She takes pride in doing as she says and does her best to inspire a similar mindset in her financial counterparts at customers and suppliers!

Steve Fordham

Technical Manager

Steve is an experienced mechanical engineer who brings crossover skills acquired whilst working within various steel and concrete disciplines. Steve’s primary focus is to technically support the growing customer base for telescopic connectors and to share his understanding of the many benefits this construction method brings to all members of the specification and construction chain. Steve is happy to present lunchtime seminars at specifiers’ offices and conduct toolbox presentations for ‘hands-on’ users.

Cliff Billington

MBE, Eur Ing, C Eng, BA, MICE, AMIStructE

Technical Consultant

A senior engineer with well over 40 years’ experience in precast concrete construction, Cliff is an expert in the field and has represented the UK on various European Technical panels, writing Eurocodes. He has also written various articles for engineering and trade journals and is author of the award winning Key2Concrete website*, which provides information and guidance on good practice and methods within the concrete sector.

In 2014, Cliff was recognised by the award of an MBE ‘for services to the construction industry’.

* Key2Concrete is now a sub-brand of British Precast and is accessible via the BPCF website.

Sally Stracey

Specification Engineer

Sally has over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry and is a field support professional, having learned the trade with various major suppliers including Schöck and Ancon. With a blend of engineering, design and project management skills, Sally is well placed to understand the challenges to be met at every stage of a project – whether by architects, engineers or contractors.

Sally likes to engage with the project design team at an early stage, to provide the most efficient solution and to ensure that any potential buildability issues are resolved before the construction phase. If you’d like to benefit from Sally’s support and advice, please get in touch to set up a seminar or toolbox talk.

Ross Tew

Sales Manager

Ross brings a wealth of experience from the construction industry, most recently leading the sales office for a specialist building and construction accessories supplier. Having also had technical experience with an international fixings specialist, Ross is adept at finding the best practical and commercial solution for the customer and takes pride in building a great ‘customer experience’.

Anthony Mather

Production Manager

Anthony has been involved with the manufacture of reinforcement continuity systems for some 20 years, so understands very well the characteristics unique to the product, as well as the requirements of customers who depend upon a timely and reliable service. In addition to overseeing all aspects of production and CARES quality management requisites, Anthony also manages transport and logistics, ensuring deliveries are distributed nationally and individual site requirements for suitable vehicle type (FORS) and booking in slots are accommodated.

Thank you for sending the calculations and installation advice. The new calculation software looks great. Very clear, user friendly and with more design checks then the previous version. It’s a pleasure to see how you are constantly improving.

Invisible Connections are an outstanding company to work with. Between Ross in sales and Derek on the technical side of things, iC have an offering which the rest of the market would do well to get close to. I can’t credit these two individuals enough for the support they have given me for both standard and bespoke FERBOX connections – some rather more complex than others!

Telescopic connectors provide us numerous advantages for precast stair installation. Apart from improved time and efficiency, the health and safety gains over traditional support methods are a key driver to satisfy our own needs, as well as those of our clients.

We hadn’t typically gone the ‘specials’ route before. But, by investing a little upfront time to schedule our FERBOX requirements, we gained a smooth supply and installation process – without wastage or complication – and exceeded the programme demands of our slip-formed cores.

As specialists in precast concrete car park construction, we use telescopic connectors for many key applications. Particularly, the BSF system helps us to construct a ‘modern’ frame without cumbersome corbel supports and enables rapid assembly on site. The technical back-up provided by Invisible Connections provides us with added reassurance.

Our operational response to the Coronavirus
Following a period of shutdown, we resumed our FERBOX manufacturing operation on Monday 27th April.

To enable social distancing in the workplace, and to accommodate a period of uncertain demand, we are now operating in small alternating teams. Some of our staff will be furloughed until we can be confident that demand is sufficiently restored. Therefore, please anticipate occasionally longer FERBOX lead times whilst we adjust to new safe working arrangements.

To be clear, our business is fully functional, albeit with some reduced capacity. As usual, lead times for bespoke FERBOX arrangements will be offered on an individual enquiry basis. We can otherwise despatch stock items, particularly our range of Telescopic Connectors and accessories, on a next-day basis.

We’re doing all we sensibly can to ensure the wellbeing of our own staff whilst maintaining what we hope will be an adequate service level to our customers. Please stay safe everybody!
