Tall Buildings Conference 2020: Our First Virtual Experience

Invisible Connections were pleased to support the Tall Building Conference on 18th November 2020.

To meet Covid 19 restrictions, this year the event was held online. As premium exhibitors we were curious to find out how the conference would unfold on a virtual platform.

Tall Buildings Conference and Awards 2020

For delegates, the virtual Tall Buildings Conference provided an opportunity to attend seminars or network, all from the comfort of the home or office. Being online, there was no need to spend time travelling, parking or queuing for coffee, one could hop between the Stage, Networking or Exhibition on the click of a mouse – which made for a time efficient if somewhat impersonal experience.

As an exhibitor, the online platform enabled us to direct message contacts with a view to setting up meetings. In keeping with other exhibitors, we found that delegates preferred to use the short breaks allocated for networking to catch up with their ‘day jobs’ instead of visiting exhibitor booths or participating in video calls. We were not alone in missing the opportunity to meet in person colleagues from across the industry or demonstrate our products in real life.

Invisible Connections Booth

We’d like to thank Radar who worked hard to make sure this event could take place, despite the current challenging circumstances. We’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners and finalists in the Tall Buildings Awards Ceremony.

The roster of speakers was impressive. Key issues currently facing the industry were considered such as environmental sustainability, fire safety and DfMA.

Steve McKechnie, Technical Director at Arup, emphasised the importance of minimising material usage to meet Zero Carbon targets, which is a subject we’ve explored. Our Ferbox Comparison Study finds using ‘specials’ instead of standard lengths results in a 20% reduction in material usage. Where telescopic connectors are used to connect precast concrete elements, no additional finishes are required which results in less material usage and less wastage.

Jenny Burridge, Head of Structural Engineering at The Concrete Centre, remarked on the acoustic and fire-resistant properties of concrete as important reasons why concrete remains the material of choice for the construction of many prestigious tall buildings. Our telescopic connectors are grouted in, which provides equivalent fire cover as concrete. Where noise is of particular concern, as in high spec residential developments, Invisible Connections’ TSS102 Stair Landing Connectors contribute to sound reduction by minimising step sound vibration transmission from the stairwell into adjacent rooms.

Jenny Burridge Presentation for Tall Buildings Conference 2020

Many of the projects referred to in the speaker presentations and a third in the awards ceremony were projects to which Invisible Connections had supplied products. The full list of finalists can be found here.

Ian Simpson, Founding Partner of Simpson Haugh presented a ‘A Case Study on One Blackfriars’ to which we supplied telescopic stair connectors. Gary Le Carpentier, Technical Director with Ramboll UK referred to 250 City Road, EC1, where a significant volume of special Ferbox reinforcement continuity was used to connect filigree slabs in the core walls. Jeremy Belcher from Balfour Beatty focused on The Madison, a project for which Invisible Connections were called upon to produce a bespoke Ferbox design to suit a capping beam to slab interface detail and thereafter at every level throughout the core.

The Tall Buildings Conference is intended to assist engineers in understanding the common challenges associated with transferring standard engineering principles and knowledge from low-rise structures to tall buildings. The conference highlights design and building technology innovation in the UK high-rise sector – providing a platform for discussion and debate to facilitate learning and knowledge transfer. Next year, the event is planned for 11th May 2021.

Join Invisible Connections’ webinar at PRECAST 2020!

British Precast’s annual conference and exhibition starts next week on Monday 2nd November.

Precast 2020 will be a virtual event this year. A series of daily one hour webinar sessions will be running between 12-1 and 2-3pm every day throughout the week. Sally Stracey, our Specification Engineer will be presenting as part of Session One, which starts at 12pm on Friday 6 November.

Sally will be asking the question who benefits when telescopic connectors are used in precast construction?

Contractors, precasters, engineers and architects all have much to gain by choosing this innovative construction method instead of traditional alternatives. Precast concrete stair landings are often supported by rolled steel angles which are slow to install, pose health and safety risks and are unsightly. On the other hand, telescopic connectors offer improved health and safety, simplified design, improved cost effectiveness and clean, uncluttered architectural lines.

This webinar explains the practicalities and theory of using telescopic connectors and is illustrated with real world project examples.

Book your space here.

Supply status during the coronavirus pandemic and the Brexit transition process

We’d like to take this opportunity to reassure our customers regarding our ability to maintain uninterrupted supply of FERBOX continuity strip and Telescopic Connectors in relation to the potential disruption caused by the coronavirus and Brexit.

To address customer concerns, we’ve prepared a statement which explains how we’re managing the key influences on our business, which are:

  • Raw materials origin
  • Inbound transportation logistics
  • Performance of our own supply chain
  • Our local ability to manage adversity

We’re constantly in discussions with our suppliers and we continually monitor government advice. We’re taking all sensible precautions to protect our business and ensure ongoing supply to our regular customers, whose loyalty we value highly.

Although none of us can know or anticipate every potential impact which could arise from the coronavirus and/or Brexit in this unprecedented year of challenges, we hope this information provides reassurance that we have done, and are doing, all we reasonably can to ensure we keep things as close as possible to ‘business as usual’.

If you have any specific concerns which haven’t been addressed, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

All information is current at the time of writing.

You can download our statement in full here.

Our operational response to the coronavirus – update

Following a period of shutdown, we are resuming our FERBOX manufacturing operation on Monday 27th April.

To enable social distancing in the workplace, and to accommodate a period of uncertain demand, we are now operating in small alternating teams. Some of our staff will be furloughed until we can be confident that demand is sufficiently restored. Therefore, please anticipate occasionally longer FERBOX lead times whilst we adjust to new safe working arrangements.

To be clear, our business is fully functional, albeit with some reduced capacity. As usual, lead times for bespoke FERBOX arrangements will be offered on an individual enquiry basis. We can otherwise despatch stock items, particularly our range of TSS/RVK and DTS/BSF Telescopic Connectors and accessories, on a next-day basis.

We’re doing all we sensibly can to ensure the wellbeing of our own staff whilst maintaining what we hope will be an adequate service level to our customers. Please stay safe everybody!

Our operational response to the coronavirus

Following government guidance to ‘stay at home’ we are suspending our FERBOX manufacturing operation so that our factory workers can isolate at home in the same way as their administration-based colleagues.

FERBOX production will be mothballed from Wednesday 1st April 2020. We expect to be able to fulfill any existing FERBOX orders for delivery week ending 3rd April 2020 (if those construction sites remain open) but will decline any new orders unless they can be fabricated by close of business on Tuesday 31st March.

To be clear, although we’re suspending FERBOX production until further notice, our business will remain functional in all other respects. Our factory and offices will be largely unmanned, but we will be remote working from a sales, technical support and administration perspective.

You can continue to reach us by phone, email or via the Contact us page on our web site. On an ongoing basis, we’ll be able to take orders and will have arrangements in place to despatch any stock items, including our ‘off the shelf’ FERBOX options, as well as our range of  TSS/RVK and DTS/BSF Telescopic Connectors and accessories.

Please accept our apologies if any of your projects which may remain open are inconvenienced, but we trust you’ll understand our responsibility to balance the operational needs of our customers alongside the health, safety and concerns of our own workforce and to ‘do our bit’ however small, to help protect the community at large.

Staying true to their Ecobuild roots, Futurebuild2020 seeks to drive change and innovation in the built environment. The programme focus is ‘Responding to the emergency – making the transition to a zero carbon world.’ The three day event offers a platform for brands to share innovations – from products to processes and solutions – with over 27,000 industry influencers and shapers.

Key issues facing the built environment will be discussed and debated on each of the six Keynote Stages which are located within each theatre: Buildings, Energy, Infrastructure, Interiors, Offsite and Resourceful Materials. Topics range from the climate emergency to the future of digital construction.

Underpinning the innovation agenda, for the first time three of the largest R&D initiatives in the history of the UK’s construction sector are supporting the event. The Construction Innovation Hub, the Active Building Centre and the Transforming Construction Network form the UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) ‘Transforming Construction Challenge’ (TCC) which is working with industry to drive change in how we build our buildings, eliminating the productivity gap in the sector. Together, these organisations want to ensure we build safer, healthier, more affordable, more energy efficient buildings which deliver better outcomes for those who use them and for wider society.

Find out what’s on at Futurebuild2020 or register to attend here.

Invisible Connections proud sponsors and member of our team shortlisted for award at CONSTRUCT 2019

CONSTRUCT’s annual flagship event, CONSTRUCT Day took place on 4th October 2019 and was attended by over 500 guests and 25 exhibitors from the concrete industry.

This year, Invisible Connections were not only sponsors of the ‘Young Achiever’ award but also delighted that our very own Technical Manager, Steve Fordham was shortlisted for the ‘Unsung Hero’ award.

The CONSTRUCT awards recognise outstanding achievements in the construction sector, acknowledging hardworking and committed individuals as well as innovative new products and systems. The awards ceremony was hosted by comedian, Hal Cruttenden, and the five winners were:

  • Projects over £2.5m: Careys Civil Engineering – Principal Tower
  • Projects under £2.5m: Oliver Connell & Son – Royal College of Pathologists
  • Health & Safety: J P Dunn Construction – Deck Box
  • Unsung Hero: Dave Heneghan – A J Morrisroe & Sons Ltd
  • Young Achiever: Macauley Stock – Southern Concrete

Invisible Connections would like to offer their congratulations to all the winners, especially Careys Civil Engineering for taking home the Projects over £2.5m Award for Principal Tower which used our Ferbox reinforcement continuity system extensively throughout. The project demonstrated a number of firsts in the UK for high-rise construction, including the installation of optical fibre cables in the concrete columns and walls.

The CONSTRUCT Yearbook, featuring all the projects shortlisted in the CONSTRUCT Awards can be viewed here.

Neil Marney, CONSTRUCT Chairman, adds:

The standard of entries at this year’s CONSTRUCT Awards was extremely high, and to see the hard work and excellence celebrated by the sector at such a joyous event makes me proud to represent CONSTRUCT as Chairman. CONSTRUCT Day never disappoints and is always a brilliant opportunity for members to come together and network in a relaxed, enjoyable environment. Although it has been a tough year for the construction industry, the high standard of work shown by our members proves that even in difficult circumstances we are able to produce quality construction to the highest standards.

During the day over £6,000 was raised for the Lighthouse Club, the charity which provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families.

More information about CONSTRUCT Day 2019 can be found here.
